2.2.3 How does IIS web adaptor know '/portal' should go to portal machine, /argis' should go to arcserver machine?
The linkage is exactly what you configured during the web adaptor installing proccess.
During the server web adaptor installing prcess, you actually did 1 thing which is create the linkage between '/arcgis' with your full arcserver machine name.
During the portal web adaptor installing prcess, you actually did 1 thing which is create the linkage between '/portal' with your full portal machine name.
2.2.3.1 how did you create the linkage during web adaptor installing
web adaptor create the linkage,
1. use '/arcgis' as arcgis server web adaptor name,
http:// web adaptor install machine (or DNS subdomain name) /arcgis will link to arcgis server machine
If I use web adaptor install machine name, URL will be
http://covchgisweb/arcgis
If I use DNS subdomain name, URL will be
http://gis1.victorvilleca.gov/arcgis
2. use '/portal' as portal web adaptor name
http:// web adaptor install machine (or DNS subdomain name) /portal will link to arcgis portal machine
If use web adaptor install machine name, URL will be
http://covchgisweb/portal
If use DNS subdomain name, URL will be
http://gis1.victorvilleca.gov/portal
3. What is web adaptor name?
Is this portal web adaptor? create a name for portal adaptor( I use 'portal', you can use 'arc-portal' whatever) .
portal web adaptor name: you will use as https://web adaptor machine/portal web adaptor name
Is this arcgis server adaptor? create a name for arcgis server. ( I use 'arcgis', you can use 'arc-server' whatever)
Is this some other web adaptor? Just create name let you know what this web adaptor is for.
4. whether it is arcgis server web adaptor or portal adaptor will be decide here, after web adaptor installer finished, a new webpage popup as post-install configuration process
5. you are creating linkage from adaptor name to link to actual full machine name. In portal case, you are linking from previous adaptor name 'portal', or 'arcportal' whatever link to arcgis portal installation machine full name. which is "covchgisport"
In this arcgis server web adaptor case, you are linking from previous adaptor name 'arcgis', or 'arcserver' or 'server1' whatever link to arcgis server installation machine full name. which is "covchgisags"
6. use your arcgis portal admin account here ( not the arcgis portal service account, service account only used when in installing arcgis portal), hit configure button
7. you can access arcgis portal through web adaptor machine, ( covchgisweb is not arcgis portal install machine, instead it is web adaptor install machine, it does not have any arcgis portal component.)
8. you actually create the linkage, between web adaptor name with your actual arcgis portal machine name.
9. every web adaptor you installed, it will show in the control panel, installed program list. Highlighted is adaptor name, from adaptor name you know which is for portal, which is for arcgis server.
